Minor NYC Subway Derailment Causes Outage, Delays

28 June, 2017, 02:45 | Author: Roger Davidson

This derailment is just one incident in a summer of increasingly severe outages and delays caused in part by the New York City subway systems almost century-old infrastructure.

The incident happened just before 9:55 a.m. near the 125th Street Station in Harlem. The subway station was subsequently evacuated.

Witnesses told Gothamist that the train was traveling between 135th street and 125th street when it began shaking violently.

New York City Fire Department Commissioner Daniel Nigro gave reporters details on the injuries at the scene.

There were reports of smoke but MTA officials said the smoke was caused by sparks created from the train when it made a sudden stop.

Some of the injuries were from possible smoke inhalation, as there was a smoke condition in the tunnel following the incident. It opened in 2009, replacing an outmoded station that had room for only the first half of a 10-car subway train. "We were stuck underground for a while but it seems nobody was hurt", Gabriela Martinez says.

He also said troops had killed 162 fighters and destroyed six vehicles along with numerous motorcycles often favoured by the group in their raids.

Joe Lhota said there were no initial indications of equipment or track failure before two cars derailed and scraped a wall on Tuesday morning. It said there was smoke but no fire.

The derailment came after a winter and spring marked by mechanical failures, power outages and several episodes in which passengers were trapped on stuck trains for an hour or more.

The New York City Emergency Management Department said the event was a partial derailment and power outages occurred on A, B, C and D trains. Emergency crews shut off track power after derailments to prevent evacuees from being electrocuted.

The number of delays has soared this year and many commuters complain that they no longer can be sure they will be able to get around the city reliably.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has said he will give $1 million "Genius" grants to the three people with the best solutions for fixing the subway system's problems, some of which, like an aging signal system, are directly connected to delays.
