Around 700,000 affected eggs could have been shipped to the United Kingdom, but the Food Standards Agency (FSA) said it was very unlikely that there was a risk to public health.

Products will be withdrawn due to the chemical's unauthorized status, rather than a specific safety concern.

A majority of the affected products are processed foods in which egg is one of the ingredients, such as in sandwich fillings or other chilled foods.

Millions of eggs have been pulled from European supermarkets in the past week after an outbreak of the insecticide Fipronil.

In early-July meanwhile, a small quantity of "liquid pasteurised egg" was supplied to a number of food businesses for use in bakery products.

Dutch prosecutors said in a statement Thursday that the two men detained during a series of raids are directors of a company that allegedly used Fipronil in egg farms.

Yet Dutch poultry farmer Anja Visscher was still eating eggs this morning.

Germany and the Netherlands have also accused Belgium of failing to disclose contamination, even after it began showing up in tests, resulting in later unnecessary recalls, though Brussels says it did not intend to cover up the incident.

A spokesperson for the British Egg Industry Council said: "British egg producers have reiterated the need for consumers and food producers to look for British Lion eggs and egg products".

Over in Denmark, the country's food administration says almost 20 tons of insecticide-tainted eggs have been sold nationwide, but it is playing down the risk to public health.

Twenty tonnes of the contaminated eggs have been sold, according to the Denmark's food safety authority.

The contaminated eggs originated from poultry farms in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and France that had been treated with the insecticide fipronil.

Millions of eggs are feared to have been tainted with traces of the "potentially harmful" pesticide Fipronil which the World Health Organisation says is moderately toxic.

"The Food Standards Agency and Food Standards Scotland are committed to ensuring that food is safe, and that United Kingdom consumers have food they can trust".
