  • Athletics: Usain Bolt anchors Jamaican 4x100 to victory

ON a very rare occasion in sports history, the bronze medalist received much more cheers and applause than the victor.

It was Gatlin's first 100-meter world championship title since 2005 and Bolt's first loss in a 100 final in more than four years, when he was defeated by Gatlin in June 2013 in a race in Rome, Italy.

Nehemiah, who missed out on his chance of an Olympics due to the U.S. boycott of the 1980 Games in Moscow over the invasion of Afghanistan, said if Bolt could accept graciously that Gatlin was justified in being there, then it should be good enough for anybody.

Both nations won their heats early Saturday, though the USA relay squad got the baton around with more aplomb than Jamaica, which had to rely on Bolt to clinch victory.

In defeat, the gracious Bolt even stopped to do his signature "To Di World" pose, much to the approval of adoring followers. Upon their race, every athlete is met by a team of three coaches; one hands them a Gatorade (blue, red or orange - which I am not convinced are technically flavours), the next asks if they are feeling any tension in their bulging muscles and then the third asks the athlete question upon question about every other competitor in the event. "I came out and did the best I could". I was always going to walk away. "All I knew was I wanted to give it everything I've got". Is it that I deserve these boos, it is not for me to say, " let go of Gatlin. I will miss the sport for sure, but I get a chance to live and travel when I want.

"I can't be a sore loser; throughout my career I've dominated".

The King is fallen, but this regicide did not alter the eternal smile of the one who will remain, what it is, the greatest sprinter of all time.

Champions Chelsea reduced to nine and beaten 3-2 by Burnley
The game between Swansea and Southampton had no goals , while Wayne Rooney bagged the victor as Everton saw off Stoke City 1-0. Mounie capped a dream debut with another goal after the break to earn David Wagner's newly-promoted team an impressive win.

He ran his last individual race, the 100m, last Saturday, managing only a bronze; no fairytale finish for him. "I did 18 years of track and field and I've been retired five years, and they're still talking about me, so I guess I still have it".

For the first time in almost a decade, the world's fastest man isn't named Usain Bolt.

Athletics' world governing body head Sebastian Coe lavished with praises for him. Usain Bolt made our lives better online, too.

Bolt is also known to love a great party. World and Olympic champion Allyson Felix spoke highly of the Jamaican.

The spirit of true sportsmanship demands that I'm glad we had the race and that it actually is the "taking part" that counts.

Bolt has won the affection of so many not just with his feats but also a charismatic personality. So please think twice before joining the ignorant crowds who vilify Gatlin to glorify Bolt.

American athletes have taken front and center at these Championships already and, watching the operations of the US Team, it is little wonder why.
