  • Hearing on Ayodhya Matter begins in Supreme Court

The court directed the Uttar Pradesh government to file translated version of the oral evidence given in the title suits within 12 weeks.

A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court will hear the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute case at 2 pm on Friday. But with all senior advocates trying to speak at the same time, the court had a hard time in even fixing the schedule for final hearing in the most sensitive case that the nation has ever faced.

But the appellant counsel maintained their stand and said such practice was unheard of and suggested that the documents should be translated by an external agency.

Mr Sibal brought to the notice of the bench that there are voluminous records, scripts and documents in seven languages, Sanskrit, Pali, Hindi, Persian, Arabic, Punjabi and Urdu which are to be translated to English. He had requested the court for an "intervening opportunity" to get heard. While the minority community appellants were represented by senior advocates Kapil Sibal, Rajeev Dhavan and Anoop George Chaudhari, Nirmohi Akhara was present through senior advocate Sushil Jain. The Sunni board is clearly unhappy with these new developments.

The Shia board on the other hand said that Abdul Mir Baqi who built the Babri Mosque was a Shia.

The land dispute in Ayodhya took political and communal overtones, with electoral outfits promising the construction of Ram Mandir on the disputed site. The Shia board came into the picture in 1989 when it was impleaded as a party to the case by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad.

The incident that shook the nation was back on December 6, 1992, when Hindu Karsevaks demolished the mosque. Many BJP leaders, including LK Advani and Murali Manohar Joshi, are facing a criminal case in connection with the demolition.

The board alleged the mosque was being looked after by the Shia community even since it was constructed but the British government had erroneously included it amongst the Sunni Waqfs in 1944 and it had approached Faizabad civil court in 1945 which had dismissed its claim a year after.

Earlier, CJI Khehar had offered to play a mediator to solve the contentious issue if parties agreed to it, saying a negotiated settlement of the Ayodhya dispute was a better option.
