  • Bryce Harper injures left knee, leaves game

Washington Nationals star outfielder Bryce Harper had to be carried off the field during the first inning of the team's game against the San Francisco Giants after his knee buckled when he slipped on the first base bag.

Harper was helped off the field Saturday after suffering an apparently serious left knee injury while lunging to try to beat out a groundball, Jorge Castillo of The Washington Post reports.

Harper remained on the ground for a few minutes as the ballpark went silent. It was still raining when Harper's injury happened.

The game had been delayed for three hours because of heavy rains.

Police officials said that the security forces were conducting a search operation when the militants opened fire at them. Police also denied rumours that a mosque was damaged during the gunfight between the security forces and the militants.

After writhing in pain on the ground for a couple of minutes, Harper was helped off the field with assistance from trainer Paul Lessard and hitting coach Rick Schu.

The Rockies inked first baseman Ryan Howard to a minor league contract on Saturday, per a team announcement. He was released by the Braves after he hit.184 in 11 games at Triple-A. Major League Baseball, not the Nationals, decided if and when the game would be played because the Giants don't return to Washington this season.
