Bryce Harper Out Indefinitely, Suffers No Knee Damage

  • San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Chris Stratton delivers a pitch during the first inning of the first baseball game of a split doubleheader against the Washington Nationals Sunday Aug. 13 2017 in Washington

General manager Mike Rizzo announced Sunday morning that Harper does not have ligament or tendon damage in his left knee after a scary-looking injury during Saturday night's game vs. the San Francisco Giants.

The all-star right fielder had just slipped on first base attempting to beat out an infield single with a lunge as his helmet flew off.

The Nationals and Giants game had already been delayed for several hours due to rain, so Nationals fans were already a little annoyed. In an effort to avoid contact with Giants first baseman Ryder Jones, Harper slipped on the base.

Armed with a 14.0 game lead in the National League East, there's not much that can derail the Nationals' season at this point, but an injury to an MVP candidate like Harper is a worst-case scenario.

But they're just 5-9 in the playoffs and still haven't won a postseason series since the 1981 National League Division Series, when they were the Montreal Expos (the only postseason series win in franchise history).

Expect a cloudy, hot and humid Sunday
Behind the front, high pressure will begin to build and settle across the region through Sunday leading to partly cloudy skies. Slight chance of showers tomorrow, with most of the area staying dry.

Harper had to be carried off after not being able to put any weight on the leg.

"He was in obvious pain and he was praying and I was praying, too", said manager Dusty Baker, adding that Harper would have an MRI. This season, Harper's hitting.327/.420/.616 with 29 home runs, 87 RBI and 92 runs scored. Harper is certainly someone the Nationals need in order to compete in October.

"We enjoy our battles and being competitive against each other", said Bochy, whose team was swept by the Nationals in April in San Francisco and is 0-4 against Washington this year. Andrew Stevenson replaced Harper in the team's lineup. "I'm very optimistic that he'll be at least fine shortly".

Stratton was reinstated from the disabled list and notched his second straight no-decision while making his second career major league start on Saturday against Arizona. Melancon has been on the disabled list with a right forearm strain since June 28 and had two strikeouts in an inning during a rehab assignment with Class-A San Jose on Wednesday.
