  • CIA director predicts more North Korea tests

He played down the gravity of Trump's tweet Friday that the US military is "locked and loaded" to respond to North Korea's threats.

Senior U.S. national security officials said Sunday that a military confrontation with North Korea's is not imminent, but they cautioned that the possibility of war is greater than it was a decade ago.

North Korea, for its part, threatened to shoot four missiles towards the island of Guam, a strategic outpost of the u.s. forces in the Pacific, where are stationed about 6,000 american soldiers.

"The United States military is always locked and loaded", he said.

"I've seen no intelligence to indicate that we're in that place today", Pompeo told "Fox News Sunday".

"I am quite confident that (North Korean leader Kim Jong Un) will continue to try to develop his missile program, so it wouldn't surprise me if there was another missile test".

U.S. President Donald Trump has made clear how the U.S. will respond to North Korea's provocations, and hopefully, the regime will understand, Pompeo added.

"The U.S. military is locked and loaded every day", McMaster said, repeating Trump's threat. The CIA chief described Kim as "rational" and responsive to "adverse circumstances".

Meanwhile, top United States military officer General Joseph Dunford is in Asia and is expected to meet with leaders in South Korea, Japan and China. "What he does is he asks us to make sure that we have viable options for him - options that combine diplomatic, economic and military capabilities".

"We're all looking to get out of this situation without a war", he added.

Rodong Sinmun, North Korea's official newspaper, said the volunteers had offered to join or rejoin the People's Army after the Korea Central News Agency (KCNA) issued a statement on Monday condemning new sanctions imposed by the United Nations in retaliation for North Korean missile tests.

In response, Mr Trump said North Korea should expect "big, big trouble" if anything happened to Guam.

CIA Director Mike Pompeo said Pyongyang was moving at an "ever-alarming rate" with its weapons programme and another missile test would not be surprising.

Pompeo declined to say how long it will be before North Korea could carry out such a nuclear attack on the USA mainland.

The North then came out with a threat to lob four intermediate-range "Hwasong-12" missiles near Guam, a tiny US territory some 2,000 miles (3,200 kilometers) from the North's capital, Pyongyang.
