Derek Wolfe has an ankle sprain

  • Broncos DE Derek Wolfe carted off field at practice

Broncos defensive end Derek Wolfe was carted off the practice field at the team's Dove Valley headquarters Saturday morning with an apparent right leg injury.

Wolfe was injured while in a pile on a running play.

Wolfe had 51 tackles and 5.5 sacks previous year and is a huge part of the Broncos run defense and pass rush. Trainers helped Wolfe onto a cart, and he was taken to the locker room.

The vaunted Denver defense can not afford to absorb any more serious injury blows.

Wolfe's injury occurred early in the team's 11-on-11 drill. Twenty-five of those tackles and 2.5 sacks came during his senior season.

The ISPR further said that incendiary explosives were used in the attack and that was the reason why nearby vehicles caught fire. Some of the injured were shifted to Civil Hospital Quetta and an emergency was declared in hospitals in the vicinity.

The Broncos added free agent rookie Nelson Adams for depth on Saturday. Safety T.J. Ward has missed the last week with a hamstring injury.

The Broncos' defense is already without starting outside linebacker Shane Ray for one or two regular season games with a torn right wrist ligament.

That performance earned him a four-year extension worth $36.7 million just before the Broncos' victory in Super Bowl 50 over the Carolina Panthers.

After practice, head coach Vance Joseph told the gathered media, "It's an ankle injury". Losing Wolfe, their best defensive lineman, would have struck a major blow to a defense looking to improve significantly against the run.

Should Wolfe miss the rest of the preseason, the 3-4 defensive ends next in line for the Broncos are Adam Gotsis, Zach Kerr and Shakir Soto.
