Diet Drinks Trick Brain, Leading to Weight Gain

  • Diet drinks and food actually trigger weight gain and diabetes, says new study

The process decreases body's metabolism, resulting in storage of more fat inside the body, say researchers at Yale University in the US. But when a beverage is either too sweet or not sweet enough for the number of calories it contains, the body's normal metabolic response is disrupted.

However, a new research study indicates that these benefits may just be theoretical since artificial sweeteners may actually increase the risk of diabetes and weight gain.

Taking into consideration that being healthy is the most important thing, a lot of people who are now aware of this fact will probably change their diet and eat less unnatural or artificially sweetened food. The brain didn't register that the diet food had calories and would make them eat more to satisfy the need.

"They may be free of calories but not of consequences - and diabetes is only one of them". According to them, these findings establish the link between artificial sweeteners and diabetes in previous studies.

The new study shows that sweetness helps to determine how calories are metabolized and signaled to the brain.

Referring to an "imminent missile threat", it includes advice like: "Do not look at the flash or fireball - it can blind you". The president called the USA military "incredible, "rock solid" and "the best in the world by a factor of five".

Dana Small, the senior author and Professor of Psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine, said: "A calorie is not a calorie".

However, when a "mismatch" occurs, the calories fail to trigger the body's metabolism, and the reward circuits in the brain fail to recognize that calories have been consumed. Misaligned sweetness and calories deceive our body's metabolism into gaining weight.

They conducted the research on 15 people who had their brains scanned when they consumed diet drinks. "Our modern food environment is characterized by energy sources our bodies have never seen before", Professor Small said.

Naveed Sattar, Professor of Metabolic Medicine at Glasgow University, commended that even though there is no solid evidence to prove the negative impacts on diet drinks are on health, a stronger as well as reliable evidence for the link of sugar sweetened drinks to higher risk of diabetes do exist.

King's College London professor emeritus of nutrition and dietetics Tom Sanders, however, completely disagrees with the results of the study and called it "gobbledegook". He argues that artificial sweeteners can not cause weight gain.
