  • A student looks at the partially eclipsed sun in northern England

The 2017 eclipse is the first total solar eclipse visible in the continental United States since February 26, 1979. Within the path of totality, you can safely witness the two or more minutes when the moon completely covers the sun with the naked eye.

"The event is being referred to as 'The Great American Eclipse", because an approximately 70-mile wide path from OR to SC will witness a total eclipse of the sun and nearly the entire continental United States will see at least 60 percent of the sun obscured.

At Lake Mead, 71 percent of the sun will be eclipsed. The focused sunlight can melt the filter and damage the eyes. Watching the celestial event is a rare experience, but it also carries a lot of dangers.

The Oak Ridge Public Library will give out 500 pairs of eclipse glasses to library patrons on Monday, August 14.

Homemade filters and ordinary sunglasses don't provide enough protection for looking at the sun or the eclipse. The American Astronomical Society, a NASA partner, has verified that these manufacturers are making eclipse glasses and handheld solar viewers that meet the ISO 12312-2 worldwide standard for such products. Optometrists want to reinforce that the only safe way to look directly at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun is through special-purpose solar filters or other ISO-certified filters, such as "eclipse glasses" or handheld solar viewers.
