  • Heading to OR for the solar eclipse? Better plan ahead

Commencing at 10:15 a.m. PDT (1:15 p.m. EDT), a lunar shadow 73 miles wide will take one hour and 33 minutes to travel from OR on the west coast to SC on the east, allowing continuous observation for 90 minutes.

Millions of Americans are getting ready to view the next eclipse on August 21, but Dr. Russell Van Gelder from the University of Washington School of Medicine warns blindness is a risk if you dont have proper eye protection. Almost every hotel room in the eclipse path is booked, which is expected to contribute to heavy - and possibly distracted - traffic on Interstate 5 and other highways throughout the morning. "So, it's about an hour and a half across the country".

How to view the solar eclipse for first timers! This is the result of the last remaining little bits of sun shining between mountains and through deep valleys on the edge of the moon, and is called Baily's Beads. "You don't want to use your sunglasses to look at the sun".

"We could see some really big back-ups and long delays from some of this additional congestion".

"On average any single spot on earth will see a total solar eclipse once every 375 years or so". This phase of the eclipse only lasts a couple of minutes in the prime areas, and ends with the sun's western edge starting to brighten, quickly followed by Baily's Beads and the Diamond Ring Effect once again, and then a rapid brightening of your overall surroundings. Make sure you don't directly look at the sun during the eclipse unless you have special eye protection.

Political tensions continue to weigh on world stocks
Investors instead turned to safe-haven assets such as gold, pushing it to a two-month high, and the Japanese yen rose. Declining issues outnumbered advancing ones on the NYSE 6-to-1; on Nasdaq, a 3.60-to-1 ratio favored decliners.

He explains that, whenever the Earth, moon and sun align to form a solar eclipse, the event is visible somewhere on Earth. The shadow will move from west to east, which means totality will occur later in the day the farther east you are located.

"We just don't know what to expect".

"It now appears that some companies are printing the ISO logo and certification label on fake eclipse glasses and handheld solar viewers made with materials that do not block enough of the Sun's ultraviolet, visible, and infrared radiation to make them truly safe", AAS explained on its website.

Tanner said even when the moon covers 75 percent of the sun, it can have lasting effects. "This is actually the region of the sun where solar activity comes from, where space weather comes from, which is something that I study very closely".

"It is certainly unsafe to look at the sun with a naked eye and that's why it's important to get the correct glasses", Merlo says.
