Officials estimated a turnout of 40,000 demonstrators.

"Looks like many anti-police agitators in Boston", Trump tweeted. He also referred to them as "us".

Counter protesters chanted slogans and waved signs that read, "Make Nazis Afraid Again", "Love your neighbor", "Resist fascism" and, "Hate never made USA great".

"I want to applaud the many protesters in Boston who are speaking out against bigotry and hate", he tweeted. "Our country will soon come together as one". "Sometimes you need protest in order to heal, & we will heal, & be stronger than ever before!" he continued.

It came a week after white nationalists, neo-Nazis and members of the Ku Klux Klan gathered in Charlottesville, Virginia, triggering violent clashes and a suspected terrorist attack in which a auto was driven into a crowd of counterprotesters, killing Heather Heyer, 32, and injuring more than 19 people.

Thousands of counter-protesters had convened in two groups before the main rally, chanting "No Nazis, no KKK, no fascists in the United States of America!"

Mr Trump eventually condemned racism specifically after his initial comments were described as "really, really good" on the website Daily Stormer, an American neo-Nazi and white supremacist site which considers itself to be part of the alt-right movement.

Around 4,000 anti-racism demonstrators were marching towards the historic Boston Common where a so-called "free speech" rally - expected to draw no more than a few hundred people - was scheduled to run from noon to 2 pm (1600 to 1800 GMT), according to an AFP photographer at the scene.

The Boston Free Speech Coalition, which organised the event, said it had nothing to do with white nationalism or racism, and added that its group is not affiliated with the Charlottesville rally organisers in any way. He received immediate backlash from across the political spectrum for not explicitly denouncing hate groups.

Some local restaurants promised to donate their proceeds from Saturday to left-leaning groups, and others refused to serve the white nationalists, with one posting a sign that said: "Hope you Nazis packed a lunch".

Counter-protesters in the MA capital chanted anti-Nazi and anti-fascism slogans, and waved signs which read "Resist Fascism", "Hate Never Made US Great", and "Smash White Supremacy".

Rockeem Robinson, a youth counselor from Cambridge, said he joined the counter-protest to "show support for the black community and for all minority communities". But other counter-protesters intervened and helped the man safely over a fence into the area where the conservative rally was to be staged.
