Kids' death toll rises to 72 in Yogi's UP

  • 30 children were reported dead in a span of 48 hours

Initially, it was reported that the children's deaths occurred due to lack of liquid oxygen in the BRD college, but Adityanath on Saturday stated that the deaths were due to encephalitis and other reasons.

More than 60 children have died within a time span of over five days at the Baba Raghav Das Medical College Hospital in the temple town of Gorakhpur.

Officials in India are investigating why dozens of children have died at a hospital in Uttar Pradesh province in the past week and whether the spate of deaths is linked to a disruption in oxygen, a district magistrate said Friday.

The Congress leader further attacked state Health Minister Siddharth Nath Singh over his remark that August witnesses a high number of deaths, and told ANI that "Such excuses coming from him is shameful and he should resign as well". Raids have been conducted at the Lucknow-based firm, which stopped supply of oxygen to the hospital as previous bills were not paid.

Reacting to the incident, Congress President Sonia Gnadhi said " I am pained beyond words by the tragic deaths of 30 children in Gorakhpur.

Union Minister Patel present at the press conference said that the central government is ready to give full support to the state.

Spending on public health in India, relative to the country's GDP, is among the lowest in the world. In the wards, nurses said they were using a combination of piped oxygen and cylinders on Sunday.

Arsenal Edge Leicester in 7-Goal Premier League Thriller
However, Arsenal and Liverpool could well have something to say about that, especially if the Wembley factor derails Spurs. Even though they showcased most of their flaws on Friday, you can't fault the spirit of Arsene Wenger's men.

Incidentally, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had visited the medical college two days ago - it falls in his Lok Sabha constituency - and inspected the paediatric ward.

On the orders of Chief Minister Yogi Aadityanath, Health minister Sidharth Narayan Singh and Medical education minister Ashutosh Tandon have rushed to Gorakhpur to take stock of the situation and take remedial measures. What happened here was due to lapse on the Uttar Pradesh government. What is shocking to know is that the oxygen supply department in the hospital had already warned about shortage.

When asked about the allegations put forward by oxygen supply agencies about their due payments, he said, "This is a wrong allegation against me". Thus he says that the point of shortage of oxygen is not true.

Yogi Adityanath visited the hospital on 9th August for inspection. "Why didn't the hospital administration make the payment?"

One uncle of an 11-year-old girl, Vandana, who died at the hospital, echoed local media reports about the chaos.

It also took a dig at Prime Minister Modi's Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, after the UP Government blamed the sanitary conditions for the death of the children.
