United States stocks have been in retreat since President Donald Trump Tuesday issued a fiery warning to North Korea to halt its nuclear program.

In Toronto, the composite index S&P/TSX has lost 143,08 points, or 0.9 %, to close at 15 074,25 points, the decline being nearly generalized to all sectors.

USA stocks rose Friday but still notched their biggest weekly loss in months, as investors were shaken by disappointing earnings results and an escalation of threats between the US and North Korea.

Trump continued the back-and-forth with a post on Twitter this morning indicating that the U.S.is prepared to take military action against North Korea.

Bond prices rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note slipped to 2.20 percent from 2.25 percent late Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Russell 2000 index of small-cap stocks finished out the week 2.7% lower, its biggest one-week decline since February 2016.

The Nasdaq finished the day at 6,216.87, a slide of 135.46, while the S&P 500 lost almost 1.5 percent, ending the day at 2,438.21. Titled "Reckless game over the Korean Peninsula runs risk of real war", the editorial suggested China will stay neutral if North Korea strikes first, but will intervene if the U.S.is the first mover. The S&P 500 gained 3.11 points, or 0.1%, to end at 2,441.32, supported by gains in consumer-discretionary, technology and health-care sectors.

Kohl's, another department store chain, slumped 8.9 percent after reporting that second-quarter sales dipped 0.9 percent compared with the year-ago period. Kohl's like Macy's did beat estimates for earnings and revenues while Dillards delivered a loss of 58 cents per share as a result of deep discounting to shed inventory. Brent crude, used to price worldwide oils, added 21 cents to $52.91.

On the currency front, the US dollar is trading at 108.82 yen compared to the 109.20 yen it fetched at the close of NY trading on Thursday.

Trucking and software stocks are also seeing notable strength in mid-day trading, while steel stocks have moved sharply lower on the day. The euro fell to $1.1735 from $1.1752. Earlier in Asia, Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 slipped less than 0.1 percent, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng slid 1.1 percent. While the German DAX Index closed just below the unchanged line, the UK's FTSE 100 Index and the French CAC 40 Index both tumbled by 1.1%.
