  • Orpheum theater won’t show ‘Gone With the Wind,’ calling film ‘insensitive

A historic theater in Memphis has canceled scheduled screenings of the classic movie "Gone With The Wind" because it could offend some patrons. The move has sparked anger from those who believe America's left wing is trying to rewrite the country's Civil War history.

"Gone With the Wind" will be gone from The Orpheum's summer movie series, the theater's board said Friday.

After the first screening on August 11, the Orpheum received numerous comments about the film which prompted them to drop it from their 2018 series.

According to the statement released by the theater, the August 11 screening "generated numerous comments".

The statement continued, "As an organization whose stated mission is to 'entertain, educate and enlighten the communities it serves, ' the Orpheum can not show a film that is insensitive to a large segment of its local population".

The theater said in a statement that normally they select movie titles for the summer movie series in the spring. The cancellation of the screening comes against the backdrop of the recent white supremacist violence in Charlottesville, Va., and a wider national debate about whether to remove public monuments to Confederate figures.

Others called the 1939 film "racist".

One person took to Twitter to call on the left to "wake up", reminding that "this reconstructive-era film had [the] first African-American Academy Award victor..." "How dare her achievement be discredited!" another Twitter user wrote. Daigle asked if that was racist, saying this had given black actors and actresses recognition in the movie industry. How dare her achievement be discredited!

An award winning movie watched by generations is being pulled from the big screen amid concerns of being insensitive.

The decision was made after the film "generated numerous comments" this year.

The Orpheum Theater announced it will no longer show 'Gone With The Wind, ' a romance movie set in the old south.

One follower said, "It's a risky time when books and movies are banned. You insulted SAG and every institution that has fought for this film to be exhibited since its release in 1939", one commenter wrote on Facebook.
