Miguel Sano won't join the Twins on their upcoming road trip and he is headed to the 10-day DL due to a stress reaction in his left shin, the slugger told reporters (including Chad Graff of the St. Paul Pioneer Press).

First baseman Kennys Vargas was recalled Monday from Triple-A Rochester for the fifth time this season to fill Sano's spot. Tim Melville was added to the roster and will start the first game of the doubleheader.

Sano leads the Twins in home runs (28), RBI (77), slugging percentage (.514) and on-base plus slugging percentage (.870). He was knocked around for six runs and 10 hits in eight innings spread over three previous meetings with the Twins, the last of which came exactly two years ago Sunday. Sano represented the Twins at the 2017 All-Star Game in Miami. Coming over on a minor-league deal midway through the year, his win on Sunday pushed his record to 3-2 with a 4.46 ERA. Turley, however, will serve as the 26th man for the doubleheader and is eligible to pitch in both games.

The brooms were out at Target Field on Sunday for a Twins sweep. "I think given the situation, dealing with the information that was passed on from our staff, was that they are concerned enough to feel that they need to get him off his feet for a little bit".
