On Saturday, far-right nationalists gathered at a rally in Charlottesville, protesting against the removal of a monument to Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. A few hours after the attack, two Virginia State Police Department officers were killed in a helicopter crash near Charlottesville.

Fields Jr. faces several charges, including second-degree murder.

The helicopter crashed shortly before 5 p.m. Saturday in a wooded area while assisting in law enforcement activities related to the clash between white nationalists and counter-protesters in Charlottesville. Her mother (whom I will not name until she is ready) said "She died doing what was right".

Nineteen people are being treated for serious wounds and five are said to be in a critical condition.

"I have a message to all the white supremacists and the Nazis who came to Charlottesville today".

In response to the criticism, the White House said in a statement: "The President said very strongly in his statement yesterday that he condemns all forms of violence, bigotry, and hatred, and of course that includes white supremacists, KKK, neo-Nazi, and all extremist groups".

Mr Trump condemned violence by "many sides" - but stopped short of explicitly condemning the far-right.

The suspect driver, 20-year old James Alex Fields of OH, is in custody, having been arrested "moments" after the crash. The news agency says Bloom became visibly upset as she learned of the injuries and deaths at the rally.

Her father, on a working vacation at his New Jersey golf club, had meant to speak briefly at a ceremony marking the signing of bipartisan legislation to aid veterans, but he quickly found that those plans were overtaken by the escalating violence in the Virginia college town.

He said in a statement with first lady Chirlane McCray: "The white supremacists have taken their hate, violence, and intolerance to the streets, but we will not be intimidated by domestic terrorism".

"These groups seem to believe they have a friend in Donald Trump in the White House ... But to be honest, this is not about Donald Trump", Signer said.

About two dozen people were arrested in Charlottesville in July when the Ku Klux Klan rallied against the plan to remove the Lee statue.
