  • Malcolm Orr fired eight times at a South Carolina police officer last year

Malcolm Antwan Orr was found guilty on Wednesday for the shooting after a two-day trial at the Hampton County Courthouse.

The court heard Smith was responding to a call on New Year's Day 2016 about someone trying to snatch groceries from customers.

Orr had continued to talk on the phone while unloading his gun into Smith, who sustained a life-threatening neck wound and two broken arms in the shocking attack.

Orr was sentenced to 30 years for attempted murder and five years for a weapons violation, the maximum amount of prison time possible.

The disturbing footage shows Smith telling Orr to stop walking to and to remove his hand from his pocket several times before threatening him with a taser. After spotting a man matching the description, Smith got out of his vehicle and ordered the suspect - later identified as Malcolm Antwan Orr - to stop.

The Fourteenth Circuit Solicitor's Office shared the entire video taken on Officer Smith's glasses. Smith located the suspect shortly after arriving on the scene and confronted the man. "If you don't stop I'm gonna tase you".

At that point, the video shows Orr quickly drawing a 9mm handgun and firing multiple times - even as he kept the cellphone to his ear with his other hand.

Eventually, Orr takes out a gun and fires multiple shots at the officer, sending him to the ground before he manages to flee to his vehicle. At least two of the eight rounds were fired while Smith was lying on the ground and another two were fired as Smith ran for cover, according to prosecutors.

After the fifth time Smith asked, Orr pulled a gun out from his sweatshirt pocket and shot the police officer.

Smith then falls to the ground and screams into his radio that shots were fired.

"If but not for the grace of God and some very good doctors, this would not only have been a murder case, but a death penalty case", said Stone. A bullet also passed through his upper torso and was removed from his back, but he survived. "I am hit in my neck some place".

Dr. James Dunne, an emergency room physician, testified that a bullet completely severed a vein in Smith's neck.

It took jurors less than 45 minutes before they came back with their guilty verdict.
