French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday warned against an "escalation of tensions" over North Korea amid a growing war of words between Washington and Pyongyang.
And that doesn't mean talk hasn't been tough - the US has been speaking forcefully to North Korea all this time, said Ellen Tauscher, former USA under secretary of state for arms control and global security under President Barack Obama.
A White House statement said the two leaders discussed the increasingly risky situation arising out of North Korea's escalating behavior. Trump has often used sharp words to argue that China isn't doing enough to rein in North Korea, and has threatened punitive measures on trade if Xi fails to act.

The comments came after Trump unleashed a slew of fresh threats against North Korea on Friday, declaring the USA military "locked and loaded".
Professor Lucas said: "The Chinese and the USA have been talking behind the scenes for months about what to do".

Yet North Korea's top general escalated those threats, saying this week he was drawing up plans to attack the US territory of Guam with four ballistic missiles. North Korea responded by saying it was considering a plan to attack Guam and dismissed Trump's warnings as a "load of nonsense". Trump's comments, however, do not appear to be backed by significant military mobilization on either side of the Pacific, and an important, quiet diplomatic channel remains open.
