  • Yanks place Tanaka on 10-day DL

A day after CC Sabathia was placed on the 10-day disabled list with discomfort in the right knee, Masahiro Tanaka is joining him with right shoulder inflammation, the Yankees announced early Saturday afternoon.

The Yankees recalled right-hander Giovanny Gallegos to replace him.

"Yeah", he said. "I'm getting some treatment and I do feel that it's getting better". Unfortunately, he joins C.C. Sabathia as recent additions to the Yankees' DL.

Having gone just four innings while issuing five free passes in his last start, it's clear that this issue has come up just recently for Tanaka.

Tanaka's start Monday at Yankee Stadium against the Mets is off and he won't pitch next weekend in Boston, but from his talks with team doctors, he's convinced that he'll be off the DL and feeling ready to be an ace again within two weeks or so.

"We decided he needs a break", Girardi said.

The way Tanaka has pitched this season, there had to be something wrong with his arm, right?

Tanaka won't throw for five days while doing strengthening exercises. "I don't think I will be out for a long time". The 28-year-old can come off the list on August 20 at the earliest.

With an 8-10 record and 4.92 ERA on the year, our models project the 28-year-old for a 4-2 record and 4.13 ERA in 56-plus innings the rest of the way this season.
