  • Florida Firefighters Evacuate 122 Residents from Nursing Homes

Hollywood police have begun a criminal investigation into the deaths at the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills, while the Agency for Health Care Administration and Department of Children & Families have begun their own investigations.

The power company, however, said the nursing home bore at least some responsibility. "I am going to aggressively demand answers on how this tragic event took place", Scott said.

He said he learned of his mother's death not from the facility, but from a reporter who got his name and contact info from a nursing home employee.

Later, Scott directed AHCA to issue an emergency moratorium for the facility, prohibiting it from admitting any patients until the order is lifted.

This storm grew so immensely powerful over warmer-than-normal Atlantic water that it devastated the first islands in its path.

Not counting the nursing home deaths, at least 17 people in Florida have died under Irma-related circumstances, and six more in SC and Georgia, many of them well after the storm had passed. The center showed deficiencies in maintaining fire and safety standards pertaining to exits and storage areas, as well as more serious problems with its generator maintenance and testing, according to February 2016 reports by Florida Agency for Health Care Administration inspectors.

WLRN says the Rehabilitation Center had a history of poor performance in state regulators' inspections. He is also the president of Larkin Community Hospital, which has campuses in South Miami and Hialeah. In the USA alone, almost 7 million people were told to evacuate, and 13 million Floridians were left without power in hot steamy weather.

The deaths happened at the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills at 1200 N. 35th Avenue, Hollywood police officials said. For example, it said the facility's certified nursing assistants significantly exceeded state and national averages for the amounts of time they spent with each resident daily. One of them was later evacuated because of the heat.

"I'm not quite clear on how this happened", Jeffrey Nova said.

The woman who shot the video sent it to her sister, Carmen Veroy. I never even knew a Category 5 existed. "Nobody's telling us nothing".

More than 80 percent in Florida have power back
Officials are holding daily calls with those facilities to make sure they have everything they need to care for their residents. The eight elderly patients who died at a Broward County nursing home have not yet been included in the death toll.

Walking through mobile homes ravaged by Hurricane Irma in Naples, Fla., President Trump praised first responders and residents for doing an "incredible" job on rescue and recovery. One resident already was dead when police got a call about someone having a heart attack.

"The Hollywood Police Department has been granted a search warrant for this property, and officers are on scene continuing their criminal investigation", said City of Hollywood Spokesperson Raelin Storey.

"It's extremely hot on the second floor of the facility", Sanchez said, but wouldn't specify if any of the six victims lived on the second floor of the two-floor building.

The facility's administrator, Jorge Carballo, said in a statement that it was cooperating fully with authorities. The center released a statement saying their hearts go out to the families and friends of those affected.

The Florida Health Care Association, a nursing-home industry group, said Wednesday morning that about 150 of almost 700 nursing facilities in the state do not have electricity fully restored.

In a press conference Thursday, Memorial Regional staff members said that when they arrived at the center, they saw patients in distress and in bad shape.

The Florida Health Care Association called Wednesday's deaths a "profound tragedy within the larger tragedy of Hurricane Irma".

"That's usually what you see in the industry", says Martinez, who works in the law firm's health care practice group.

Elsewhere around the state, a Coral Gables apartment building was evacuated after authorities determined a lack of power made it unsafe for elderly tenants.

"The facility had some power". Asked whether the severity of the two hurricanes had led him to rethink his position on climate change he said: "Well, we've had bigger storms than this".
