Facebook's AI research labs employ around 110 scientists and engineers.

Facebook Inc.(FB) plans to announce the opening of a new artificial-intelligence center in Montreal on Friday, according to media reports.

The Facebook AI Research (FAIR) lab is the company's second AI research facility outside of the USA, and will be led by computer scientist and McGill professor Joelle Pineau.

"Our goal with artificial intelligence is to build systems that are better than people at perception - seeing, hearing, language and so on", Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said at the company's F8 developer conference in April, reports CNBC.

American social networking giant Facebook is making a play to expand its artificial intelligence research efforts.

Yann LeCun, Facebook's chief AI scientist, said the company was attracted to Montreal by the city's strong talent pool in artificial intelligence. "We recognize this, and look forward to working with and investing in the AI community in Montreal to help further enhance Canada's status as one of the most innovative research hubs in the world".

Google past year provided $3.33 million in grant funding to the Montreal Institute for Learning Algorithms, an academic lab based at the University of Montreal that focuses on machine learning. It has also drawn investment from Google and Uber Technologies Inc.

Combined, Pineau's areas of expertise make her a great fit for a company like Facebook that is trying to flawless human-computer interactions, as is the case with chatbots.
