It gradually weakened to a tropical storm by Monday morning. Last week it killed at least 37 people as it crossed the Caribbean.

More than 180,000 people huddled in shelters in the Sunshine State.

Most of the deaths were from vehicle accidents, with three deaths directly blamed on Hurricane Irma's winds, according to CBS News. It also spread misery into Georgia and SC as it moved inland with winds at 50 miles per hour, causing flooding and power outages. Federal Emergency Management Agency administrator Brock Long said preliminary estimates suggested that in addition to the destroyed dwellings, 65 percent of homes in the Keys sustained major damage.

"Tuesday morning's conditions are not going to be worse, but schools have been closed because we are expecting to see those heavy winds continue during the morning bus routes", Chase said.

Latest numbers from the World Health Organization suggested that almost six million people in the US are without power, while nearly 200,000 people are staying at more than 600 shelters in Florida and Georgia. He said nearly every mobile home park in the Keys had overturned homes. It flooded streets and coasts, swamped homes, uprooted massive trees, cast boats ashore, snapped power lines and toppled construction cranes. The core was located at 2 p.m. EDT Monday about 50 miles (80 kilometers) south-southeast of Albany, Georgia.

The U.S. death toll for Irma has increased to 11 people after three deaths were reported in Georgia and one in SC.

Fort Myers sits north of where Hurricane Irma made landfall over the weekend, though the area did suffer some damage.

The Keys are linked by 42 bridges that have to be checked for safety before motorists can be allowed in, officials said. Facebook groups were forming Monday to help from afar.

Efforts are slowly underway to get back to normal.

Although frustrated Floridians are anxious to return home, officials are still enforcing an access ban in the Lower Keys as they evaluate the infrastructure, the roadways, health hazards and other safety measures.

They saw each other for the first time since Irma.

Irma was initially expected to hit Florida's east coast, including Miami Beach.

Around 150 employees and contractors are heading down to assist Florida Power and Ligth, Duke Energy, and Tampa Electric Company in restoring electricity to millions of affected customers.
