John McCain Cosponsors Bill To Block Trump's Ban On Transgender Troops

In August, Trump asked the military to indefinitely extend the ban on transgender people enlisting in the military, but left it up to Mattis to decide if those now serving should be allowed to stay. Republican Senator John McCain said this week he was backing the bill. Under Obama past year, the Pentagon ended its ban on transgender people serving openly, calling the prohibition outdated.

In the meantime, transgender troops will be allowed to serve, Mattis said. Senator Gillibrand also helped lead the charge in the Senate to repeal this discriminatory, harmful policy to strengthen our military by building support for an 18-month moratorium on enforcement of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and securing a commitment from Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin to hold a committee hearing on the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy in February 2010. It has also created uncertainty for thousands of transgender service members.

The Pentagon has issued new guidance which temporarily allows trans troops to re-enlist in the military until it is determined how the controversial ban will be enforced.

The lawsuit was brought by Lambda Legal and OutServe-SLDN on behalf of six transgender military members and three transgender people who wish to enlist, as well as the Human Rights Campaign, Gender Justice League, and the American Military Partner Association.

On Thursday when he met with reporters in the Falcons' locker room, Jones said he wasn't concerned about his stats. The Packers have actually faced three reigning MVPs before in the McCarthy era, but they were all running backs.

Manning emphasized Friday that the "same current policy and procedures" remain in place on transgender service members while the review takes place. "Doing otherwise would only harm our readiness at a time when our military is deployed around the world in defense of our country".

"Our armed forces should welcome the service of any qualified individual who is willing and capable of serving our country", Collins said in a statement.

The issue raises a number of thorny legal questions, such as whether the Pentagon can say in 2016 that transgender individuals can serve openly and then a year later threaten to throw out anyone who came out publicly. Susan Collins of Maine. This amendment received bipartisan support, however, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has refused to bring it up for a vote during floor debate for the FY2018 National Defense Authorization Act. Its passage would affirm the notion that all Americans who are willing and able to serve should be eligible. He directed Mattis to conduct a review and figure out how to make the shift.
