  • Farmington teacher accused of mistreating student on leave

When the boy refused to stand for the Pledge last Thursday, Chaney claims he was snatched out of his chair by a teacher and forced to stand.

Brian Chaney told reporters that his son was violently snatched out of his chair and berated after refusing to stand for the Pledge. The student felt his rights were violated when his teacher, who has yet to be named, tried to force him to stand for the pledge on September 7.

That shouldn't be a controversial stance, but his teachers reacted to his civil disobedience by trying to force him to stand against his will.

The superintendent of Farmington Public Schools released a statement detailing that the district does support the right of students to opt out of the pledge, announcing that it was conducting an investigation and that the teacher involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome. "I pledge to God and my family", he said.

Stone's father, Brian Chaney, said at a board meeting it's his son's own decision to sit and he has the right to do so.

In the meantime, Stone's family is looking at other options as to where to send him to school.

'I don't feel safe going to that school anymore because I don't know what they're going to do next, ' Stone lamented. Stone, a sixth-grader, said he doesn't want to go back to East. "I didn't know what was going on". He says the next day, a teacher yelled at him for sitting during the ritual, ClickOnDetroit reports.

"It's his choice to sit".

Heitsch said the district supports each student's right to decide whether to participate in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Chaney said he'd prefer to keep his son, who he said is a 4.0 student, in the Farmington district, because "we've had a wonderful relationship".

The authorities are investigating the case, the teacher to "violently" exhausted to make Chaney stand during the Pledge of Allegiance was put on leave.

At this time, Chaney and his parents stated they do not know if he will return back to that school. He said students have the right to skip the Pledge of Allegiance.
