  • Rubio, Nelson say feds should look at Hollywood nursing home

"We're conducting a criminal investigation into the deaths that occurred here", said Hollywood Police Chief Tomas Sanchez, during a press conference Wednesday morning.

In a statement, the Rehabilitation Center Nursing Home said that as result of prolonged power failure due to Hurricane Irma, the home's transformer, which powered the air conditioning system broke down.

Police evacuated 115 residents on Wednesday from the facility, whose air conditioning was cut by the storm. After noticing the situation, Broward County Fire-Rescue came to aid in the evacuation.

Hollywood spokeswoman Raelin Storey said one patient died on Tuesday and the body was taken away by a funeral home. The utilities have announced that power outage in some area could be extended for days, it could even extend for weeks.

The overall death toll from Irma climbed to 81 on Wednesday, with several hard-hit Caribbean islands accounting for more than half the fatalities, and officials continued to assess damage inflicted by the second major hurricane to strike the USA mainland this year.

"We are devastated by these losses".

- A Hollywood nursing home where eight residents died Wednesday after Hurricane Irma is rated "below average" in a federal scorecard that includes information about issues such as inspections, staffing, and quality of care.

Police were first called to the facility at about 4:30 a.m. but did not arrive until after 6 a.m., officials said.

Some were brought to Memorial Regional Hospital, just across the street from the nursing center, and were treated for for respiratory distress, dehydration and heat-related issues, said Dr. Sharief said there are no details about the cause of the deaths.

The hurricane struck northern Caribbean islands last week, leaving at least 44 people dead, before it smashed into the United States mainland over the weekend, with at least 33 storm-related deaths reported.

"Staff set up mobile cooling units and fans to cool the facility and continually checked on our residents' well-being to ensure they were hydrated", Carballo said. Owner Ralph Marrinson said all five of his Florida facilities lost electricity after Irma.

"Facility administration has been in communication with Florida Power & Light and the Governor's office since the beginning of Hurricane Irma, and is cooperating fully with relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances that led to this unfortunate and tragic outcome". According to state law, nursing homes must file emergency preparedness plans with local emergency management in order to operate. Another resident died later in hospital, officials said. City officials said three additional people later died at the hospital.

The Rehabilitation Center of Hollywood Hills was incorporated in June 2015 and the hospital announced past year that it had purchased Palm Springs General Hospital in Hialeah for $40 million.

It seems that things initially went downhill when the nursing home's air conditioner was crushed by a tree.

In Broward County, more than 212,000 electricity accounts were without power Thursday morning, state officials said.

Police wouldn't comment on whether the nursing home had a generator or whether investigators had ruled out carbon monoxide poisoning.

Later Wednesday, a second south Florida nursing home, Krystal Bay Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in North Miami Beach, was evacuated.
