She survived the 2014 attack.

The verdict came late Friday night as 10 of 12 jurors agreed Anissa Weier, 15, was suffering from a mental disorder that prevented her from conforming to the law when she and Morgan Geyser attempted to fatally stab a sixth-grade classmate in 2014, the Journal Sentinel reported.

Anissa Weier's lawyer Maura McMahon told the court that the teenager was lonely and depressed at the time of the attack and "descended into madness".

Weier, now 15, pleaded guilty in August to being a party to attempted second-degree intentional homicide but claimed she was mentally ill during the attack and wasn't responsible for her actions. The jury's job was to decide whether she was.

She will now receive treatment in hospital for three years rather than serve a prison sentence.

For her part, Geyser has been diagnosed with schizophrenia. The girls were 12 at the time.

Because of the plea, jurors on Friday were examining only whether she was legally responsible because of mental illness.

After 9½ hours of deliberations, the jury returned a verdict. He ordered the panel to continue deliberating.

The girls felt that they were Slender Man's "proxies", and had to stab their classmate on behalf of Slender Man so that the character wouldn't hurt their own families. Leutner managed to crawl out of the park and was found by a passing bicyclist. Jurors will determine whether she was mentally ill when she helped stab Payton Leutner.

Weier's attorney, Joseph Smith Jr., asked why Weier, a good student, did not recognize that the belief in Slender Man and his powers to kill them or their families was a delusion.

Waukesha County Assistant District Attorney Kevin Osborne told jurors that Weier went along with the attack to preserve her one and only friendship with Geyser. All the girls were 12 at the time. They noted Weier didn't clearly tell anyone she was afraid of Slender Man until after the stabbing.

Psychologists testified at a previous court hearing that Weier suffered from persistent depression and a delusional disorder linked to schizotypy, a diminished ability to separate reality from fantasy.

"First of all, she was 12", Westendorf said, adding that the teen was influenced by a website focused on imaginary killers.

The case of a Wisconsin girl who admitted stabbing a classmate to appease an online horror character called Slender Man will soon go to a jury.

Doctors said Payton Leutner nearly died in the attack.
