Five men are missing after their dredger capsized after an early Wednesday (Sept 13) morning collision with a tanker, the second such maritime accident in Singapore's waters within a month. Consul-General Wang Jiarong expressed his concern for the missing crew members and hoped that the authorities would do their best in the search and rescue operations.
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said in a statement that the incident happened at 12.40am on Wednesday, about 3.15km south-west of Sisters Island.
The Singapore Police Coast Guard has so far rescued seven of the Chinese crew members. A hospital spokesperson said that five of the seven men have been discharged from the hospital.
The tanker reported that Its 26 Indonesian crew did not sustain any injuries.
Five aircraft and 22 vessels from Singapore were deployed to support the operations on the Dominican dredger JBB De Rong 19, which was moved to near Pulau Senang, a small island south of the main island of the Singapore city-state.
A Super Puma helicopter from the Republic of Singapore Air Force began searching from the air at 7am, according to MPA. Writing a Facebook post, he reiterated that MPA was leading the search-and-rescue operations for the five crew members.
The MPA also said that vessel traffic control had given warnings to both vessels prior to the collision. In August, the USS John S. McCain and an oil tanker collided off Singapore, killing 10 U.S. Navy sailors.
"There is no disruption to shipping traffic in the Singapore Strait", the port authority said.
It said that the dredger was transiting in the westbound lane, while the tanker was leaving Singapore to join the eastbound lane in the Singapore Strait. The cause of that collision is still under investigation.
