In the wake of an attack late previous year on police by militants of the Muslim Rohingya minority - they make up about 4% of the overwhelmingly Buddhist nation - the military unleashed an indiscriminate crackdown on Rohingya towns.

A Myanmar government committee investigating the Rohingya Muslim minority in Rakhine state said adhering to the rule of law was the best means to resolve the ongoing humanitarian crisis, an statement said on Friday.

Earlier on Wednesday, the UN Security Council held closed consultations on the means of addressing violence against the Rohingya in Myanmar.

One of the dozens of boats carrying Rohingya to the Bangladeshi border town of Teknaf capsized on Thursday and at least two people drowned, police said.

Boris Johnson has called on Aung San Suu Kyi to do more to condemn the "gross abuse of the human rights of the Rohinyga population" in Myanmar as hundreds of thousands of Muslims are displaced from the west of the country.

"We appreciate the hard and complex situation that Aung San Suu Kyi finds herself in", Tillerson said, alluding to the power sharing agreement that gives military leaders vast influence over the country's affairs, "and I think it is important that the global community speak out in support of what we all know the expectation is towards the treatment of people, regardless of their ethnicity". And this is going to, in many ways, I think, define the direction that Burma will take.

Violence in Myanmar has invited reactions from around the world.

The Rohingya are a minority ethnic group located in Myanmar's western Rakhine state and are considered to be a variation of the Sunni religion.
