He was playing for the Indian Premier League side Sunrisers Hyderabad till last season. "I could even play another year of global cricket", he added.

Ashish Nehra has played 17 Tests (44 wickets), 120 ODIs (157 wickets) and 26 T20Is (34 wickets) for India. I played a lot under (Sourav) Ganguly and (MS) Dhoni.

Nehra is now part of three-match T20I series against Australia but he didn't feature in the first two matches.

The Delhi pacer has not been part of the playing XI in this series and this could be one of the reasons for his decision.

"When I came into this series (versus Australia), I had prepared well".

"What we have heard is that Nehra has spoken to the captain and coach and informed them about his decision to retire after the T20 match in Delhi".

Nehra made his T20I debut in 2009 against Sri Lanka.

"Looking at the way Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah played in the last five to six months, they are ready".

Nehra clarified his stand on retirement from all forms of cricket, he said, "I have decided something, there is no going back". The 38-year-old, who staged a comeback (albeit in T20I cricket) in 2016 after sitting out for five years, will not even feature in the IPL.

"The most important thing is what the dressing room thinks about me. I am always somebody who takes one series at a time", he said.

"It is always good to retire when people are asking why, rather than why not", he told reporters in Hyderabad ahead of the third T20 against Australia on Friday. Moreover, I want to retire on a high.

He is best remembered for his 6 for 23 against England at Durban in the 2003 World Cup, a match he played despite being unwell and frequently throwing up in between his overs. He was part of India's 2011 World Cup winning squad. Sadly, Nehra's last ODI was in the semi-final against Pakistan before injury once again saw him miss out on the finals. He made his global debut in February 1999. "I also a person who thinks positively", he added. "I was always mentally strong". Nehra is ecstatic to play at his home ground. "For me the true measure of success is how many times you bounce back from failure".

Unfortunately, back and ankle injuries have hindered his career throughout. As I have said, there are no big (T20) tournaments coming. I always feel it is not how you start, but how you finish. "I always trained to play for India". The day I linked up with this squad, I spoke to the captain and coach about my plan because whenever Ashish Nehra is in the side he plays in the XI, he doesn't sit out.
