  • Anupam Kher appointed new chairman of FTII Gajendra Chauhan sacked

Anupam Kher who has appeared in over 500 films and has been part of the theatre circles has now been appointed as the new chairman of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), located in Pune.

The National Award victor, who began his acting career with "Saaransh" in 1984, has a vast repertoire of over 500 films.

Following several controversies, the post remained vacant for at least seven months, after Chauhan demitted office in March this year.

Though the institute has denied receiving any official communication on Kher's appointment, the actor tweeted, "I feel deeply humbled & honoured to be apportioned as the Chairman of iconic #FTII".

"FTII needs somebody who is well-qualified, someone having a great body of work", said Kher.

Kher, who appeared in several acclaimed worldwide films, also appeared in more than 100 plays. Anupam had then said the FTII needed a person with much more qualifications than Chauhan had as a producer, director or actor.

Anupam Kher has also earlier headed the Central Board of Film Certification from 2003 to 2004.

To a question on the appointment at the party's media briefing here, Congress spokesperson R.P.N Singh said the actor has given some enormous performances and hoped he will bring changes for the betterment of the institution.

Anupam's appointment as the FTII chief was announced on Wednesday.

Some of Kher's prominent films include Saaransh, Daddy, Lamhe, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Maine Gandhi Ko Nahi Maara, Khosla Ka Ghosla and A Wednesday. So, I think he will be able to handle it quite nicely. He has been one of the busiest actors in the film industry and even made a record of winning the Filmfare Award eight years in a row in different categories.

Kher, who has appeared in acclaimed global films such as Silver Lining Playbook and Bend it Like Beckham, was the Director of National School of Drama from 2001-2004.
