U.S. billionaire Tom Steyer of California state kicked off an online and TV advertising campaign against PresidentDonald Trump on Friday, calling for people to write letters to Congress members for the President's impeachment. "Congress has impeached past presidents for far less".
Last year, at a campaign stop in Florida, Trump called Steyer a "radical activist" and contended that he was spending tens of millions to elect Democratic rival Hillary Clinton because she "wants to shut down energy production all across the United States", leading to higher energy bills.
On the NeedToImpeach website, Steyer posts an open letter making his case for Trump's removal.
Whenever a political advocacy campaign pops, it's wise to look at who's funding it, and it's no surprise to see Steyer putting his money behind an effort like this. Dianne Feinstein's comment that Trump "can be a good President".
"He is repealing clean air protections and unleashing polluters, even as increasingly catastrophic natural disasters supercharged by our warming planet ravaged the country throughout the summer", Steyer writes.
"He has threatened to reduce aid for millions of American citizens in Puerto Rico who are struggling to survive without drinkable water or electricity - a move that would be a total dereliction of his duty".
"We need to impeach and remove from office such a risky President", he said.
Steyer has funneled millions of dollars into Democratic candidates and causes.
Steyer has announced his plans for contesting California's primary against Feinstein in 2018, CNN wrote, adding that he also plans to run for the president's office in 2020. Al Green (D-Tex.) and Brad Sherman (D-Calif.), two backbenchers from safe seats, have introduced articles of impeachment with no real hope of being adopted. And while he doesn't expect to have trouble getting the signatures of rank-and-file Democrats - a recent poll found that almost 70 percent want Trump removed from office - finding politicians willing to join the effort doesn't look to be as easy.
