CBS reporter: I didn't talk to Kaepernick about kneeling

  • Trump calls for tax changes for NFL following national anthem protests

Having been out of action for almost a year, Kaepernick still wants to play in the NFL. During the segment, anchor James Brown turned to the anthem debate: "And kneeling, he said?"

An NFL reporter is now taking back a statement he made live on TV Sunday morning that former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick is not planning to continue kneeling in protest during the national anthem if he is given a chance to play in the league again. La Canfora's original story was referenced by a few outlets, including the Associated Press (AP), who later issued a correction.

His girlfriend, Nessa Diab, also wrote on Twitter that "reports that Colin will stand for the anthem are completely false!". Kaepernick retweeted that statement, as well as a number of other tweets that point out La Canfora's error (including one that bemoans our "era of "Fake News" reporting").

"A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its trousers on", Kaepernick tweeted with an attribution to Winston Churchill. He's going to donate all his jersey sales and he's planning on standing for the anthem, if given the opportunity.

Gary Player: Sad to see Old Course 'brought to her knees'
But in flawless , benign conditions for scoring, what had seemed nearly inevitable in this event for years finally happened. Maybe that's just a bit more pressure on myself but I'm so happy that I managed to defend it and what a great week again.

"Colin would have to address any future demonstrations", La Canfora said in another tweet.

It turns out that La Canfora had never spoken to Kaepernick directly about his thoughts on standing or kneeling during the anthem.

A spokesperson for CBS sports referred CNNMoney to those tweets. He did so in protest of police violence towards African-Americans around the country. He also said that players who don't stand should be fired. In March, sources claimed Kaepernick would be willing to stop kneeling for the upcoming football season.

On Sunday, Vice President Mike Pence walked out of a 49ers-Indianapolis Colts game after players took part in the protest.
