Crocodile suspected of killing Australia woman with dementia

  • Three enormous saltwater crocodiles are said to live in Mowbray River

The dementia sufferer is believed to have wandered into a tropical forest and become disoriented.

Queensland Police Acting Inspector Ed Lukin said they also found some "biological matter which we believe to be human remains".

The results of the forensic tests are likely to be released on Friday.

"We continue to search the area in the hope of finding her alive (but) because of the proximity of these items near the creek bank, we can not rule out the possibility of a crocodile attack".

Police are now searching for the crocodile.

Ozcare Port Douglas facility manager Daniel Robinson said the company was "deeply saddened" by Ms Cameron's disappearance and offered condolences to her family.

Though crocodiles have been known to attack humans, the agency adds, "the statistics show that you are more likely to die from a lightning strike or bee sting than from a crocodile attack".

This triggered an extensive search in the area, leading to Cameron's clothes, walking stick and what appeared to be human remains found near a creek bank about 2 kilometers from the nursing home on Thursday, reported Sky News Australia.

"We would like to sincerely thank the police, SES, fire brigade and everyone in the Port Douglas community who helped us in the search for Anne", she posted to a Port Douglas Facebook page on Thursday afternoon.

Department of Environment and Heritage Protection wildlife director Michael Joyce said the mangrove-lined Craiglie Creek was particularly narrow and a helicopter was needed to get a better look.

Bob Katter is calling for a crocodile cull.

Saltwater crocodiles have seen rapid population growth in Australia since becoming a protected species in the 1970s and are especially prevalent in tropical northern Queensland. He was treated for wounds to the chest and arm.

An agitated three-metre long croc was caught on Wednesday evening in Port Douglas, but authorities do not believe it attacked Mrs Cameron.

NSW woman Cindy Waldron, 46, was dragged underwater during a late-night swim with a friend, who tried in vain to save her, at Thornton Beach in Queensland's Daintree National Park.

Police said the remains found at Port Douglas have been sent for further testing, but there is no indication of foul play.
