England up to 12th in Federation Internationale de Football Association world rankings; Republic, Scotland also climb

  • Brazil have progressed to the Round of 16 at the FIFA U-17 World Cup being held in India for the first time

Northern Ireland have fallen three places to 23rd in this month's Federation Internationale de Football Association rankings, meaning they will not be seeded for the World Cup play-offs.

The Republic, who have risen eight places to 26th, and Northern Ireland, who drop three places to 23rd, will face either Italy, Croatia, Switzerland or Denmark.

And Spain is not going to be part of it.

Wales, who missed out on the World Cup and are trying to convince Chris Coleman to remain as boss, slip to 14th while Scotland, who also failed to qualify and are looking for a replacement for Gordon Strachan, are 29th.

According to the October rankings, Germany, Brazil, Portugal, Argentina, Belgium, Poland and France will be in pot 1 along with hosts Russian Federation.

The seventh-seeded Gavrilova will play for the title tonight (6.30pm AEST) against sixth-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova . But I will try to stay aggressive and play my game tomorrow".

No disrespect to Russian Federation or Poland, but there's a clear desired destination for teams in Pots 2-4: Whichever group is headed by Russian Federation or Poland.

Spain will lead the second grouping, and beyond that, it gets a little tricky. Based on the rankings, Switzerland (11th), Italy (15th), Croatia (18th) and Denmark (19th) will be in pot one and will play one of the four teams in pot two.

Mexico at No. 16 heads CONCACAF teams. Likewise they can not play Sweden or Greece. Northern Ireland, Sweden and Republic of Ireland will look to change that by winning their playoffs, while Tunisia, Egypt, Senegal and Iran, DR Congo, Australia, Nigeria, Serbia and Japan could all land here, too.

The "Blue Tigers" were ranked 107th last month but they are now at 105th in the latest rankings, courtesy their win over Macau in the AFC Asian Cup 2019 qualifiers last week.
