Facebook and Instagram back online after widespread outage

Facebook was down for many users Wednesday - illustration file picture.

Websites like Down Detector and Outage Report have had high numbers of users reporting the outages.

Around 11:11 a.m. EST, users began to report issues and it appears that the outage has spread. Outage Report is also monitoring the problem, which it says started at 11.11 a.m ET.

Thousands of users are complaining about Facebook down, and the company's photo-sharing platform Instagram also seems to be affected.

Facebook has confirmed a widespread outage impacting users' ability to access the social network and Instagram across the USA and parts of Europe. Facebook users reported the inability to access both personal Facebook pages and brand pages.

"We're working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible".

The hashtag #facebookdown was trending on Twitter.

The social media giants have been faced with worldwide outages since late Wednesday morning.
