  • Arsenal star Olivier Giroud reveals he came 'very close' to making Everton move

The club-record signing of Giroud's France team-mate Alexandre Lacazette left his future up in the air.

The France worldwide was heavily linked with an Emirates departure and looked to be on the verge of calling time on his Gunners career.

Following the departure of Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United, Ronald Koeman was eyeing a new experienced striker to bring to his side and to replace the Belgian and Lukaku was said to be on top of his wish list.

Despite spending most of his time on the bench the 31-year-old insists he made the right decision in turning down the Toffees.

"I was very close to signing for another English club, Everton", Giroud told Canal Football while away on worldwide duty.

'I had the opportunity to leave [Arsenal]'.

"But I made the best choice I think".

Everton's pursuit of the Frenchman has been well documented, and now the player himself has revealed how close he came to swapping the Emirates Stadium to Goodison Park.

"I'm happy in England, it's nothing against those clubs but a return to France is possible one day".

The 19-year-old spent one full season at the League One outfit before Everton beat a host of Premier League rivals to secure his signature last January. I didn't want to return to France.

They now sit six points behind leaders Manchester City after seven games of the new campaign as they prepare for their trip to Watford in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

With Giroud hoping to make France's squad for the 2018 World Cup, he will have to make a bigger impact as the campaign progresses.
