Hall of Fame QB YA Tittle dies at 90

10 October, 2017, 00:28 | Author: Joan Malone

Pro Football Hall of Famer Yelberton Abraham (Y.A.) Tittle has passed away at the age of 90.

Most LSU fans today weren't alive when Y.A. Tittle was running the Tigers' offense from 1944 to 1947, but not many before or since have done as good of a job as Tittle.

Amid his 10 seasons in San Francisco, Tittle amassed a 45-31-1 record and set up some psyche boggling numbers.

Tittle was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971, and his No. 14 jersey is retired by the Giants. He was born in Marshall, Texas, played college football at LSU, and had been living in Atherton, California since retiring from the NFL.

Tittle led the New York Giants to 3 consecutive division titles from 1961 to 1963, but alas, Tittle never played on a championship team.

When Tittle left San Francisco, he went to NY to play for the Giants for the last four seasons of his career.

Tittle's 1957 season was rewarded with dozens of accolades: The quarterback was named league MVP by the UPI, he was named to the Pro Bowl and also named first-team All-Pro for the first time in his career.

Known as "The Bald Eagle" for his receding hairline, Tittle won the NFL MVP award in 1963 while tossing a then-record 36 touchdown passes in a season. Before the 1961 season, Tittle's esteem was low to the point that the 49ers exchanged the 34-year-old QB to the Giants for a new kid on the block hostile lineman (Lou Cordileone). Tittle is pictured sitting on the field, spent and exhausted after throwing an interception. In 1962, he set an National Football League record that has been tied but not broken with seven passing touchdowns in a game. Tittle was suffering from severe dementia.
