Hurricane Ophelia on Thursday morning (Oct. 12) was slowly moving through the Atlantic Ocean toward the Azores and Ireland.

As of 10 a.m. CDT Thursday, Hurricane Ophelia was located 715 miles southwest of the Azores and was moving north-northeast at 2 mph.

But the storm's more lasting legacy may be its unusual northeasterly track towards Europe. And while cooler northern waters mean Ophelia won't have the intensity of recent storms that have slammed the USA, it is still likely to pack hurricane-force winds.

Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November.

The hurricane center's five-day forecast, which can change, has Ophelia heading toward the British Isles by Monday.
