Iceland became the smallest nation ever to book their place at the World Cup finals when they beat Kosovo to top their European qualifying group and claim an automatic spot in football's showpiece event in Russian Federation next summer.

Whatever that destination will be - and only a fool would rule out Iceland springing a surprise or two in Russian Federation - it has been a thrilling expedition.

Iceland, the revelation of Euro 2016, made history by qualifying for the World Cup for the first time while Serbia assured themselves of returning to the competition after missing the 2014 edition. "They're a bloody good side", tweeted former England worldwide Gary Lineker, who now works as a TV presenter. Along the way, they picked up a historic win over England in the knockout round with a 2-1 victory.

To get to this point, Iceland recorded victories against Ukraine, Finland, Turkey, Croatia and Kosovo to top its group with seven wins from 10 matches and seal its spot in next year's competition.

Iceland managed to finish top of a hard World Cup qualifying group that included Croatia, Ukraine and Turkey and they will now hope to defy the odds and get out of the group stages at the tournament itself. "The first beer after a party is not the best".

Barclays PLC (BARC) Shares Down 1%

Iceland beat Turkey on Friday night 3-0. "The success is not an end in itself but a long journey towards a final destination".

Qualification across the regions concludes today, before the play-offs within each confederation and inter-confederation play-offs take place next month.

With a population of just over 300,000, Iceland became the smallest nation to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.

"It's a great example for small nations like our own who aim to have a good team, well organized, in the future".

"Are you kidding! We are going to the World Cup!" was the reaction of the local TV commentator at the final whistle, and even Hallgrimsson seemed bewildered. Moreover, Eygpt acquired world cup berth in 28 years as Cairo crackled with firecrackers and celebrations continued from dawn to dusk.
