In another escalation of the controversy over NFL players protesting during the national anthem, former San Francisco 49ers Colin Kaepernick has filed a grievance accusing NFL teams of colluding to keep him out of the league.

Attorney Mark Geragos, who is representing Kaepernick in grievance proceedings, issued a statement that was quoted in full by CBS Sports Sunday night.

The former San Francisco 49ers player made headlines previous year when he knelt during the national anthem before games to protest social injustice.

The former San Fransisco 49ers quarterback wasn't signed to a team in the offseason after opting out of his contract with the 49ers in March, and has yet to receive a contract to play for a new team several weeks into the 2017 National Football League season.

Kaepernick opted out of his contract with the 49ers at the end of last season and remains a free agent despite a rash of injuries and poor play at the quarterback position.

The 29-year-old Kaepernick said his agent reached out to all 32 teams to make sure they were aware of his interest in playing this season.

The lack of offers looks even more egregious because numerous teams have been in desperate need of a functioning quarterback.

The NFL players' union said Sunday it will support Kaepernick but will have no role in the grievance. Kaepernick's camp will have to provide addition evidence to prove collusion.

Kaepernick and his legal team are claiming the owners violated terms of the collective bargaining agreement, specifically a clause that prohibits teams from acting together in regards to a player's employments status. NFLPA said it has been in regular contact with Kaepernick, and "Our union has a duty to assist Mr. Kaepernick as we do all players and we will support him".

His move to take a knee has swept across the league, with several players kneeling before games, amid heavy criticism from President Donald Trump, who said during a rally in Alabama last month that players who do that should be "fired".

Kaepernick passed for 2,241 yards with 16 touchdowns and four interceptions while fumbling a career-worst seven times with the 49ers last season.

In 2012, he led San Francisco to the Super Bowl, where the team eventually lost to the Baltimore Ravens.
