Paris plans ban on combustion-engine cars by 2030

Diesel-powered vehicles are actually set to be outlawed in Paris before their gas-powered equivalents.

"This is about planning for the long term with a strategy that will reduce greenhouse gases", Christophe Najdovski, a transportation policy official for the city of Paris, told France Info radio. According to French local authorities, Paris has chose to cease all internal combustion engine-powered vehicle sales by 2030, looking to become a carbon-neutral city by 2050.

The new announcement would most likely speed up the transition from internal combustion cars to plug-in hybrids and then on to electric cars. It's also worth noting that Paris served as the host city of the global Paris Climate Accord, a pact to reduce carbon dioxide globally. Her detractors have accused her of waging a war against cars. The statement added that Paris officials would keep discussing the issue with residents and auto makers in the coming months.

Although it may seem incredibly hard for North Americans to imagine such a ban, many Parisians do not own a auto.

Paris has faced rising air pollution in the last few years.

Hidalgo has been seeking to reduce pollution with a series of measures.

In September 2016, Paris authorities chose to close a 3.5 kilometer (2.2- mile) downtown road and transform it into a promenade.

With her ambition of taking gasoline-powered cars off the Paris roads by 2030, Hidalgo wants to go faster than the French government.

California state Assemblyman Phil Ting plans to introduce a new bill to ban fossil-fuel-powered cars by 2040. Paris is already part of a group of cities that includes Madrid, Mexico City and Athens that plan to end the use of diesel-engined cars by 2025, collectively representing metropolises that are home to 42 million people.
