A few dozen neo-Nazi marchers, led by alt-right figure Richard Spencer and carrying flaming torches, gathered at Emancipation Park near a covered statue of Confederate general Robert E. Lee.

Spencer called Saturday's protest - where demonstrators chanted "We're going to come back again" - a success, but the event was far smaller than August's "Unite the Right" rally, which drew an estimated 500 to 600 participants, the ADL report noted.

The Charlottesville Police Department said in a statement that Saturday's rally began around 7:40 p.m., included 40 to 50 people and lasted no more than 10 minutes. They dressed similarly in white shirts and some wore sunglasses in the dark while chanting, "You will not replace us".

Richard Spencer, for his part, has taken to twitter to pat himself and his followers on the back for a job well done and to taunt the city's mayor, Mike Signer.

"Another despicable visit by neo-Nazi cowards", Signer tweeted.

Spencer and his cronies were protesting the city's decision to move the Robert E. Lee statue and march through the area on August 11 carrying torches and chanting racial slurs.

"We continue to oppose these racists and their message of hate", said McAuliffe. James Alex Fields Jr., 20, was charged with second-degree murder, three counts of malicious wounding and one count related to leaving the scene. A common theme of white nationalism in the United States is the idea that white people are being killed off in a genocide.

White nationalists demonstrated twice over the summer before the "Unite the Right" rally in August that resulted in the death of 32-year-old Heather Heyer after a auto plowed into a crowd of counter protesters.

On Saturday night though, police stayed on the sidelines, making their presence in and around the park known while not intervening. Many respondents on social media said they should be referred to simply as white supremacists or neo-Nazis.

A Black Lives Matter group later staged a counterprotest at the University of Virginia president's home.
