  • Trump Nominates Kirstjen Nielsen As Next Homeland Security Secretary

The White House says President Donald Trump will nominate Kirstjen Nielsen to serve as his next secretary of Homeland Security.

The White House confirmed earlier reports by The Washington Post and Politico that Nielsen was next in line for the position.

Nielsen is an expert in homeland and national security policy and strategy, with a focus on critical infrastructure protection, according to her biography on GWU's Center for Cyber & Homeland Security.

Nielsen was retired Marine Corps General John Kelly's chief of staff when he was secretary of Homeland Security during the opening months of Trump's presidency.

If confirmed by the Senate, Nielsen would take the reins at a sprawling department with more than 240,000 employees that is responsible for USA border and airport security, immigration policy, disaster response, refugee admissions and other matters.

There were 1,049 games released for the handheld, so Nintendo shouldn't have any trouble choosing a couple of dozen. The Game Boy was small enough as it was, thank you.

Around that time, two sources familiar with the search for a permanent DHS secretary told ABC News that the effort was back at "square one", though Trump said a decision was coming within a month.

The announcement was expected later in the day, the official said on condition of anonymity.

Mr. Kelly had drafted Ms. Nielsen to be his chief of staff at the Homeland Security department, and when the president plucked him to serve in the West Wing, he brought her to the White House as his No. 2. Now, with Kelly's urging, President Trump will nominate Nielsen to head DHS, which has been run by acting director Elaine Duke since Kelly's departure.

It was not immediately clear when Nielsen's nomination would be announced. She previously worked as a special assistant to George W. Bush and for the Transportation Security Administration.
