Mr Griffiths, speaking after the meeting on the enforcement of sanctions on North Korea, said the ships were found "transporting prohibited goods".

In addition to informing member states about the four new designations, Griffiths also pointed to concerns about sanctions evasions that seem to be continuing, particularly with regard to the export of coal.

The ships were reportedly the Petrel 8, Hao Fan 6, Tong San 2 and Jie Shun.

He said the ban, which went into effect on 5 October, did not entail asset freezes or travel bans.

The ban was expanded last month to include textiles and North Korean guest workers and also capped oil exports. "This is a decision rather quick and decisive of the Committee" after the resolutions adopted in recent months against North Korea, welcomed Hugh Griffiths.

In Saturday's game, Logan Forsythe helped lead the charge as he was 3-for-5 with a stolen base, three runs and an RBI. The trouble began when Taylor smoked that leadoff double into the leftfield corner on Greinke's sixth pitch.

According to the MarineTraffic website, a maritime database that monitors the movement of vessels, Hao Fan 6 from St. Kitts and Nevis along the Petrel 8 registered in Comoros, Tong San 2 from North Korea and the Jie Shun, are accused of dealing with North Korea in defiance of United Nations (UN) sanctions on the rogue nation.

Banning ships that break the sanctions is part of a United Nations get tough policy. That resolution, which followed North Korea's first successful tests of intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of reaching the United States, also banned the country from exporting coal, iron, lead and seafood products.

"Sanctions are not a goal in itself", they aim to bring North Korea to a negotiating table to talk about its weapons programmes that are deemed threatening to the world stability, stressed the diplomat at the end of the meeting.

Ambassador Ja Song Nam said North Korea will withstand the blow of sanctions and continue "along the road of building the socialist power by dint of the spirit of self-reliance and self-development".

The Council of the European Union on Tuesday said it was restricting work permits granted to North Korean nationals as well as the sale of natural gas and petroleum to the Asian country in response to Pyongyang's controversial nuclear and ballistic missile programme.
