  • United States airstrikes hit al-Qaeda hideouts in Yemen

The US military airstrike carried out on October 16 in the Al Bayda governorate in Yemen targeted training camps of the Islamic State terrorist group (also referred to as ISIS or Daesh in Arabic) and killed dozens of extremists, the US Department of Defense said in a press release.

"The American unmanned aircrafts struck training camps and arms caches of the al-Qaeda terrorist group in different mountainous villages of al-Bayda province with more than 12 airstrikes", Xinhua quoted the local military official as saying on condition of anonymity. The camps were used to train new recruits to conduct "terror attacks" using AK-47s and rocket-propelled grenades, the statement claimed.

The militant group has seized upon the instability in Yemen, where Shiite Houthi rebels are waging an insurgency against the Sunni government backed by a Saudi-led coalition.

The UN statistics showed that over 8,000 people, a lot of them civilians, have been killed in Yemen's conflict since the Saudi-led coalition entered the conflict in 2015.

The 15% or so drop in the pound against a range of currencies has ratcheted up the cost of imported goods such as food and energy. Meanwhile, monthly input price inflation eased notably to 0.4 percent from 2.3 percent.

The Yemen war has killed 8,673 people and wounded 58,636 - among them many civilians, according to the UN.

Several hideouts of the Yemen-based al-Qaeda branch were hit by a series of airstrikes launched by United States drones in the central province of al-Bayda, a military official said.

"Strikes against ISIS targets disrupt and destroy militants' attack-plotting efforts, leadership networks and freedom of maneuver within the region", the CENTCOM statement read.

Before Monday's strikes, the USA military had exclusively conducted drone strikes and commando raids against the other prominent jihadist group in Yemen, Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, or AQAP. The United States, which considers AQAP as most risky branch of Al-Qaeda, has intensified attacks against its members since arrival of Donald Trump to presidency in January.
