A Mario Movie May Be Arriving by Way of Minions Animation Studio

Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto is said to have been playing a key part in the negotiations and could serve as a producer on any eventual film.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Illumination - the studio that made the Despicable Me movies and spin-off Minions - has been in talks with Nintendo for more than a year.

First debuting in1985, the videogame followed a mustachioed plumber, Mario, and his lanky brother, Luigi, in their quest to save Princess Peach from a very angry villain Bowser. There's a whole generation that remembers the mess that was the live-action Super Mario Bros. movie from 1993, and few other game-based movies live up to expectations. In 1993, their live action Super Mario Brothers movie flopped and, since then, the company has been anxious to put their beloved characters to the movies. It may have been why the company has been so reluctant to tap into the movie market with its properties since.

Lionel Messi Blocks Neymar Move To Real Madrid
But Mbappe is a big fan of the Uruguayan, whom he believes is the "perfect" type of striker for himself and Neymar to play alongside.

Since that debacle, Nintendo has been largely averse to licensing its characters for film, with their only theatrical outings being animated movies based on the Pokémon series.

The Super Mario Bros. movie doesn't have an official title yet and is only in early development, so not much is known about it yet. The agreement seems more likely considering how Universal's theme parks are set to host some Nintendo-themed attractions in the coming years.

Let's all hope (and pray) that Nintendo, together with Illumination Entertainment, can pull this off.
