His release comes less than 24 hours after the Federal Bureau of Investigation reported Dandan, an air traffic controller at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, was charged with possession of a weapon of mass destruction.

Paul George Dandan, 30, is charged with possession of a weapon of mass destruction, acquiring a weapon of mass destruction and transporting a weapon of mass destruction.

Dandan is now being held on a $45,000 bond at the Mecklenburg County Jail.

Police said Mr. Fells, 39, admitted making the bomb so that he could "use it against a neighbor", but he changed his mind and gave it to Mr. Dandan instead, according to the report. A bomb squad sent to the house later confirmed that the device was a homemade pipe bomb, police said.

A North Carolina air traffic controller was one of two suspects arrested after being found in possession of a homemade pipe bomb.

The Federal Aviation Administration told WCNC-TV that Dandan was sacked from his job at Charlotte Douglas International Airport after his arrest.

Weekend weather: Just how cold will it get?
A little warmup on Sunday with temperatures back in the upper 40s and a chance for rain showers by Sunday evening. The Accuweather.com forecast is calling for a brisk Friday with a high temperature of 41 degrees and sunny skies.

During the investigation, police determined that Fells had made the device.

Following Dandan's arrest, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) terminated his access to the airport.

The charges stemmed from a 911 call on November 3 reporting that someone had a homemade explosive device in the 300 block of Minitree Lane, police said late Friday. "He did not have access to any aircraft at the Airport", Charlotte Douglas Airport said in a release.

Dandan was also charged back in 2015 for assaulting a woman, according to the newspaper.

Dandan was sacked from his position at Charlotte Douglas International Airport following his arrest, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Online records show that Derrick Fells is facing three weapons offense charges as well as a charge for possession of a weapon of mass destruction.
