  • GQ names Kaepernick ‘Citizen of the Year

The Cleveland Browns icon previously criticized the former National Football League player who started the protests, Colin Kaepernick, saying the quarterback needed to get his priorities straight.

Rapper J. Cole, who met Kaepernick years ago, was frank about his surprise at seeing Kaepernick take a knee before realizing the power of what the quarterback was doing.

The former quarterback's National Anthem protest has sparked conversation and brought more attention to police brutality and systemic injustice against Black people, placing the issues in the homes of millions.

"It cost him his job". That's made room for his protest to be interpreted in different ways, but rather than let "detractors will only twist your words and use them against you" as the GQ piece reads, the magazine invited Kaepernick's friends, mentors, and former teammates to shed light on why the goal of his protest should not be diluted over time. It also transformed Colin Kaepernick into a lightning rod and a powerful symbol of activism and resistance. He posted a message on Twitter, saying he was "honoured' by the recognition".

Kaepernick was the first pro-athlete to take a knee during the national anthem at NFL games past year in protest over police brutality, and racial and social injustice. Kaepernick parted ways with the San Francisco 49ers in March and hasn't been signed by another team.

Responding to the GQ announcement, several famous American sports personalities and social media users voiced their support for Kaepernick.
