  • Couple accidentally shot following guns in church discussion

When another person asked if they could see the gun, the man mistakenly said it was not loaded and pulled the trigger, grazing his own palm before cutting right through his wife's abdomen.

An 81-year-old man pulled out his.380 caliber Ruger handgun, reports the Knoxville News Sentinel, and ended up accidentally shooting himself and his wife.

He said he could tell it was not loaded.

The couple, in their 80s, were taken to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

The man removed the gun's magazine and cleared the chamber before showing it to other church members. After several people looked at the gun, he reloaded it and put it back in the holster and put it away.

"He pulled it back out and said, 'With this loaded indicator, I can tell that it's not loaded, '" according to Police Chief Russ Parks. The bullet then hit his wife in the lower left side, went out the right side of her stomach, and through her right forearm. "Evidently he just forgot that he re-chambered the weapon", the officer says.

"The schools were placed in a temporary lockdown for the students' safety".

Parks said due to confusion between the caller who contacted 911 and dispatch, initial reports indicated the two had been shot outside the church, and that an active shooter situation may be in place.

No charges are expected as a result of the incident and the man is not expected to lose his carry permit, according to the News Sentinel. "No one who was in the church is wishing to press charges, and we in the police department think they've suffered enough".
